Le film est raconté à travers les yeux de la petite Maisie, 7 ans, ballotée au coeur d'une bataille pour sa garde qui oppose sa mère Susanna (une ancienne rock star) et son père Beale (un vendeur d'art).

Aux États-Unis, dans le Sud profond, un musicien de jazz noir, Traver, est en fuite après avoir été faussement accusé de viol par une femme blanche. Pour éviter le lynchage, il vole un canot et parvient sur une petite île habitée par un garde-chasse, Miller, et par Evvie, une jolie et très jeune adolescente, qui vient de perdre son grand-père. Miller est un blanc raciste, qui convoite la jeune fille qu'il a sous sa garde, et va finir par abuser d'elle. Lorsqu'il apprend que Traver est recherché pour viol, il s'empare de lui et l'attache à un poteau. Arrive alors le pasteur Fleetwood, qui doit ramener Evvie dans un foyer d'accueil. Il découvre toute la situation et, convaincu de l'innocence de Traver, fait une proposition au garde-chasse : il oubliera l'abus sexuel si Miller libère Traver. Miller accepte et évoque un possible mariage avec Evvy.

Gentil et brisé, un sans-abri se bat avec d'autres en vidéo pour de l'argent mais trouve bientôt du réconfort auprès d'un ami improbable et du journal perdu d'une jeune fille.

He lures the high-society, including the television presenter Amaury Jr. Marcelo is arrested again and is sent to prison. During a rebellion, he uses his leadership to present the claims of the prisoners and help to control the situation.

Le film se déroule juste avant Noël, quand la santé défaillante d'une mère plonge ses quatre enfants adultes et leur père exaspérant dans le chaos, les obligeant à affronter leurs relations dysfonctionnelles et un deuil imminent. Mais June, cette mère à l'esprit acéré, orchestre son déclin comme elle l'entend : avec un humour mordant, une franchise déconcertante et beaucoup d'amour.
